an elsewhere place

Graphic Studio Gallery, Dublin, September 9th – 29th 2012

This exhibition combined etchings, photographs and a text work. I was interested in exploring the search for utopias within our worlds, and the restless desire to be somewhere else. Travel provided the starting point for the project, which began with a residency at Edinburgh Printmakers in 2010.

Travel can encourage us to re-examine our environments with fresh eyes and can bring our attention to the countless small things that often go unnoticed around us. It brings with it expectation and anticipation, hopes and desires. These expectations can be unreal: we dream of places that are perfect, places we will never arrive at.

The prints depict a world of abstracted landscapes and cityscapes telling fragments of stories, showing the unseen, the hidden and the unreal as they lurk beneath turbulent skies.
